Our People
Most news agencies onboard full-time journalists into a tightly controlled, corporate environment. Their jobs are rigidly defined and they are expected to tow the company line. They seek out similar-minded people and pigeon hole them into specific little roles. We take a much different perspective. We onboard on a competitive ‘as you wish’ basis, meaning you can work as much or as little as you want. If you want to write one article per month, so be it. If you want to write one per day, that’s fine too. We seek out good people — focusing much less on academic qualifications or spotless employment histories. We want real people to investigate real news, and to report the reality to real people.
In our estimation, your “I WILL” is much more important than your I.Q. — or your ‘I Have’. Cutting to the chase, we want people who can smell the bullshit a mile away; who can close in like sharks and get at it. We want people who will relentlessly pursue truth.
Working with Signal High
Onboarding it not like joining a big happy family, it’s more like enlisting a forward moving force. This force is comprised of many different people, from many different backgrounds, and many walks of life, scattered around the planet. Each of us have a differing perspective from the other and our faces tell a different story. We are not related, we’re not family. What unites us, what brings us together and propels us forward, is our core belief that the people have the right to know the truth. We are a force united in the relentless pursuit of truth.
Here are five really important things to know about us:
- We are a decentralized, distributed workforce. Most of us work from home, on the road, or while travelling in between. We rely heavily on technology and share a reliable infrastructure to carry out our work. So you will likely build friendships with people you have never met.
- In the news business, timings everything. This is where hard work comes in. Hard work, good communication, excellent coordination, and common cause. At the end of the day, we have to get the job done and done right. Otherwise we are little more than mainstream media.
- Everything goes to support the front. We are structured that way. We have an ultra-flat organizational structure, a streamlined publishing process and even our top executives are very active in the day-to-day. Decisioning authority rests as close to that front line as possible.
- You will likely get more out of this than you put in. For every unit of work, you will likely receive two units of recognition, a unit or two of respect, a couple units of appreciation, a unit of adoration for the team and a unit of compensation. Whether you work four hours a month or forty hours a week, your hard work will pay off in many ways.
- We are transparent. There is no mystery. There are no hidden echelons. No sacred cows. We relentlessly pursue truth. We monetize by helping our clients choose the best possible ways of announcing their brands, products, and services. When they do well, we do well. We negotiate fair and equitable license for our intellectual property. We both prosper. It’s honest business.
Different? Yes. Truthful? Absolutely. Something to be proud of? We believe so. Signal High News Corporation is a great place to be, a great force to be part of.
Nom de Plume
We support the use of professional writing names, often referred to as a nom de plume (French: Pen Name), or nom de guerre (French: War Name), with limited exception. Safety and security is of the utmost importance, and we protect our sources — including our writers, reporters, and radio-studio personalities. We will even authorize the use of multiple professional writing names, where appropriate.
N.B. (1) Press credentials are only issued under true identities. (2) Using a professional writing name does not escape liability that would otherwise be incurred. (3) We see a nom de plume, or nom de guerre, as a news source and afford protection under the press shield. (4) News executives must approve a professional writing name before it can be used.
Meritocracy
We recruit the best, employ the best and promote the best. Signal High News Corporation is, in all senses of the word, a meritocracy. We are a casual, non-union workplace, with open, fair, transparent, and equitable human resources practices. This is to say that engagements, lateral transfers, acting assignments, preferential selection of work, and all other organizational and administrative selection processes rely on experience, demonstrated success, formal and informal education, work ethic, flexibility, fitness for purpose, application versatility, aptitude, attitude, and workplace performance. While seniority may, to some extent, be considered, it is not the only consideration.
Double Hatting
There are very few roles in the company that are mutually exclusive. This is to say that one person may hold more than one position, if they choose — e.g. a journalist may also wish to work as a moderator; an account executive may wish to double as a radio producer, etc. Given that our compensation scale revolves heavily around the ‘cut system’, where each role in a process is paid a percentage of the revenue, we welcome double hatting and accommodate as best we can. Compensation is paid by role.
Personnel interested in double hatting several roles should contact people@signalhigh.news directly to determine what processes have to be completed.
