Louisville, Kentucky (Signal High) —– The Kentucky police officer who blindly fired ten bullets into Breonna Taylor’s home in a 2020 during a botched raid has been sentenced to 33 months in prison.
Former Louisville Metro Police Department detective Brett Hankison was handed the sentence after he was convicted of deprivation of rights under the color of law. He will be subject to an additional three years of probation once his sentence has been served. The U.S. Justice Department weighed in, asserting that Hankison should be given a one day sentence, as he poses no threat to the public.
Several protesters in support of Taylor were arrested for “creating an unsafe environment.” None of the protesters fired ten rounds into a private dwelling, blind. Bianca Austin, Taylor’s aunt, was among those arrested — for crossing a street and clapping her hands before being violently confronted by police. She was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstructing a highway. The police department took opportunity to blather on about respecting the first amendment and how they understand the pain caused to the community, etc.
One of the many reports received about this day claimed police taunted protesters with racially motivated hate speech, one reportedly saying, “yeah well somebody’s gotta keep you ni*gers in check.” The same report explored the broken relationship between the police and the public caused by this event, and the lack of police accountability. “We need to say her name. Say her fucking name!” he wrote.
Brionna Taylor was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on June 5, 1993. Breonna Taylor was a daughter. Breonna Taylor was a sister. Breonna Taylor was an honour role student who excelled in mathematics. Breonna Taylor attended the University of Kentucky (Lexington). Breonna Taylor was a much loved paramedic and practical nurse. Breonna Taylor served her community. Breonna Taylor was ruthlessly gunned down in a botched police raid, riddled with bullets while sitting unarmed in her apartment. Breonna Taylor was besmirched and belittled by the same police responsible for her assassination. Breonna Taylor deserves justice. Breonna Taylor. Breonna Taylor. Breonna Taylor.
Breonna Taylor!
