Inverness, Scotland, UK (Signal High) —– A UK medical doctor has been arrested for posting abusive social media content about his son’s rape victim.
According to the British Broadcasting Service (BBC), Dr. Andrew McFarlane, a general practitioner in the Highlands, was taken into custody and charged with communications offences. In 2022, his son Daniel was convicted of raping Ellie Wilson, who has since become a campaigner for survivors of male sexual violence. It is alleged that Dr. McFarlane, 61, took to social media to discredit Wilson, claiming his son was a victim of a miscarriage of justice. He publicly called Wilson a manipulative liar, claiming she abused, threatened, and blackmailed his son, Daniel.
Dr. McFarlane was released to appear in court at a later date.
Daniel McFarlane was convicted in 2022 and sentenced to five years imprisonment. A key element in his conviction was a clandestine recording Wilson had made after the fact, of an alleged confession. The two attended University of Glasgow.
Dr. McFarlane was reported to the General Medical Council (GMC), the UK regulator of medical practitioners. He has had special conditions imposed on his medical registration (his license); however, he is still able to see patients. It is GC policy that all internal investigations are suspended while criminal prosecutions are ongoing.
