/PG/ Akron, Ohio (Signal High) —– Signal High News Corporation continues to follow the killing of Jayland Walker at the hands of police in Akron on June 27, 2022. Eight police officers fired 94 bullets, hitting Walker 46 times in seven seconds. He was unarmed.

Police claim that the unarmed Walker, 25, had fired a gun in the air and fled police in car and on foot when police attempted a traffic stop for a broken tail light. State investigators claim to have recovered a gun from Walker’s car; however, no evidence was made public that actually tied Walker to the gun itself.

On April 27, 2023, an Ohio grand jury declined to indict any of the police officers involved.

The family of Jayland Walker has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Akron as well as police and city officials, seeking $45 million in damages. “Jayland Walker’s death has been mischaracterized as his fault,” Bobby DiCello, an attorney for the Walker family stated at the grand jury. He called that mischaracterization “repugnant.” The lawsuit specifically names Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan and Chief of Police Stephen Mylett, claiming that they allowed police officers to engage in “violent behaviour” that “disproportionately involves African Americans.” DiCello points to internally circulated documents and other evidence in support of his case.

This writer has reached out to the Akron Police as well as the Mayor but neither replied.
