/MC/ Missouri (Signal High) for PowerGames.Online —– Theodore McCarrick, the former Archbishop of Newark, has died. He was 94 years old.
McCarrick, who led the Diocese of Metuchen in the 1980s, was expelled from the ministry for his involvement in one of the Catholic Church’s most infamous sexual abuse scandals. He was ordained in 1958 at New York and eventually rose to the level of Cardinal. He was a prominent voice and fundraiser for the Vatican. In 2019, a Vatican investigation determined he sexually molested adults as well as children.
He was defrocked by Pope Francis and accused of abuse in at least 10 lawsuits in New Jersey, and in two criminal cases in Massachusetts and Wisconsin. He was the only Catholic Cardinal in U.S. history to face child sex abuse charges. He was also accused of ignoring abuse allegations made against priests under his control. All criminal charges against McCarrick were dropped when he was deemed not competent to stand trial. McCarrick denied any wrongdoing.
“In his prime he was the prince of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in the United States for decades,” said Bruce Novozinsky, an abuse survivor from Monmouth County and author of the book Purple Reign: Sexual Abuse and Abuse of Power in the Diocese of Trenton. “He was also a predator who exchanged career paths to young priests and seminarians in exchange for sex [and] transferred known pedophiles from parish to parish.” Father Kenneth Lasch of Pompton Plains, an advocate for victims of clergy abuse, said McCarrick left behind a “terrible legacy.”
