/PG/ San Jose, California (Signal High) —– A six year veteran of the San Jose Police became “no longer employed” after two dozen highly racist and racially biased text messages we discovered as part of an investigation into an “officer involved shooting.”

Former police officer Mark McNamara shot college student K’aun Green during a brawl at a downtown restaurant in March, 2022, and the investigation into that incident led to the discovery. A separate administrative investigation was launched into the messages, according to San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata.

Mata describes McNamara’s messages as “racially biased” and “disgusting.” One of the messages read “I hate Black people.” Many messages contained racist, derogatory language. The messages were exchanged with another police officer who is presently under investigation. Criminal charges are not anticipated in relation to the messages.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan calls the incident an abuse of power. “Assuming these allegations are upheld, he should face the full consequences of his actions,” Mahan said. City Manager Jennifer Maguire said in a press release, “I stand with Chief Mata and all the officers of the San Jose Police Department who serve our community. There is no room for racial bias in our City. Our community and workforce deserve better.”
