/PG/ London [England] (Signal High) for BadCop.Online —– Almost six hundred U.K. police officers were fired in the first quarter of this year, according to reports from London. This in response to a growing distrust in policing and a litany of scandals, hearings, inquests and court rulings too lengthy to list. The vast majority of constituents have lost faith in their police forces, and police commanders are under great pressure to clean up their act — to clean out the corruption.
In the first few months of this year 593 police officers were fired and banned from holding office. This is a 50% increase from last year, a record number.
Seventy-four officers were dismissed for sexual offences and other misconducts, 18 for possessing child pornography, 125 for dishonesty, and 71 for discriminatory behaviour. Last year, London police officer David Carrick was sentenced to 30 years in prison for dozens of rapes against 12 women.
Assistant Chief Constable Tom Harding, spokesperson for the College of Policing, said the conduct cases was “hugely disappointing … however, these figures. show that we have effective, robust procedures in place to identify and deal with these officers swiftly, and to prevent them from holding future roles within the police,” Harding continued. “These figures show that there is nowhere to hide for people who fail to meet the high standards set across our police forces.”
Some might say that not hiring them in the first place would have been a better course of action. The same might say that these criminals, almost six hundred of them, hid quite well for quite a long time in the ranks of U.K. police forces.
This writer reached out to Harding, and the London Police. Neither issued a response.
