Summary
The right to keep and bear arms is enshrined in the second amendment of the U.S. Constitution [link]; however, states also have their own regulatory authority [link]. Other countries have different perspectives: Canada [link], the United Kingdom [link], Australia [link], and Germany [link] all have gun control laws that differ from each other. Gun control has always been a contentious issue and will likely be for some time.
Preference
It is the preference of Signal High News Corporation that the pen remain mightier than the sword — that its journalists not have the need for firearms, or weapons of any kind; however, we are not naive. We understand all too well the dangers that journalists face, and believe they have the same rights afforded others.
We also understand that firearms and other weapons might give the wrong impression should a journalist press a subject on a news item. It is a complex matter. In the end, Signal High News Corporation is not a government and lacks the moral and legal authority to dictate whether or not journalists refrain from doing something that they would otherwise be lawfully entitled to do. We are about freedom, not control.
Policy
No person engaged by Signal High News Corporation shall carry firearms or any other weapon while on duty, or actively engaged, unless (a) they are lawfully authorized to do so; and (b) they are properly trained, licensed, and insured to the standards of the enabling authority; and (c) they do so in the safest possible manner, using the equipment, procedures, etc. stipulated by the enabling authority.
Any person engaged by Signal High News Corporation who elects to carry firearms or other weapons while on duty, or actively engaged, does so on their own accord, at their own peril, ipso facto agreeing to forever and irrevocably indemnify Signal High News Corporation, in perpetuity, and to save same harmless, regardless.
Persons engaged by Signal High News Corporation who elect to carry firearms or other weapons while on duty, or actively engaged, shall be mindful of how possessing same may be perceived by subjects being pressed on any given news item, and must adopt their approach, conduct, and behaviour so as to alleviate any intimidation, nervousness, or pressure unduly caused by the arms.
Signal High News Corporation reserves the right to investigate and act on complaints from the public, or from other persons engaged, that involve engaged persons and firearms or other weapons.
For purposes of this policy, knives, chains, dogs and other animals (that are not service animals) shall be considered weapons; however, the wearing of body armour or other protective devices shall not.
Other than the foregoing, Signal High News Corporation takes no position; it does not endorse, recommend, allow, or enable — it does not preclude, restrict, or limit.
