/PG/ Creve Coeur, Missouri (Signal High) for BadBusiness.Online —– Monsanto has reached settlement agreements in nearly 100,000 lawsuits pertaining to its product, Roundup.
Monsanto has paid approximately $11B through negotiated block settlements with plaintiffs who had significant cases in the litigation, and by settling with plaintiffs before trial. These settlements account for nearly two-thirds of all Roundup claims; however, an estimated 67,000 remain. Class action suits are still pending in California.
It wasn’t too long ago that Roundup was the most popular weed killer in the world, used by homeowners, professional farmers and gardeners alike. But several scientific studies suggested that prolonged exposure to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, might cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and other cancers. Monsanto is owned by Germany-based Bayer AG. A fund of $16B has been set aside to conclude the lawsuits.
