/MC/ Dallas, Texas (Signal High) for BadMedicine.Online (NBC) Credit: Mike Hixenbaugh —– In September 2025, NBC News published an investigation revealing that North Texas Health Science Center has been “leasing” the body parts of unclaimed corpses without consent. The center shipped out many of the bodies and body parts to out-of-state medical schools, medical device manufacturers and health care education companies — charging steep fees, for example $649 for a head, $900 for a torso, and $703 for a pair of legs.
The Texas Funeral Service Commission investigated and opened the books. They confirmed that the center had entirely failed to obtain permission from next of kin before using the bodies. They also failed to get regulatory approval for moving the body parts across state lines. In some cases, little to no effort was made to notify next of kin, let alone get their consent for donation. Both Dallas and Tarrant counties had provided the center with 2,300 unclaimed bodies dating back to 2019. They have cancelled their contract. Boston Scientific and the U.S. Army have also stopped buying body parts from North Texas.
