West Lincoln, Ontario, Canada (Signal High) —– A private, Canadian, all-boys, military academy being sued for ongoing physical and sexual abuse ignored by administration.  A Canadian judge has imposed a partial media ban to protect the identity of the victim.  Signal High is a U.S. news media outlet and is not subordinate to the whim of Canadian courts; however, in this particular case, a decision has been taken not to identify the complainant, at this time.

According to its material, Robert Land Academy provides a military-style school program for boys in grades five through twelve, focusing on academic remediation and university admission.  It was founded in 1978 and tuition costs approximately $64,000 per ten month school term.  Robert Land is no stranger to controversy.

The claimant is seeking general damages for loss of education, opportunity, and income related to physical and sexual assault, battery, forcible confinement, and mental distress during his time at Robert Land in the late 1990s.  In total, the claimant is seeking more than three million dollars.  His parents enrolled him at the academy believing its small classes and structured environment would match his learning style.  Instead, according to the claim, he was physically abused by staff, and sexually assaulted by a superordinate.  He alleges that when he reported the abuse, he faced further victimization at the hands of school administration.

The claims have het to be proven in court.  According to claimant counsel, more than thirty lawsuits have been filed against Robert Land Academy, many within the past few years.

Robert Land headmaster and spokesperson Pete Stock is attributed as saying that the investigation is ongoing.  He took the opportunity to blather on about their values, past and present.  Stock also said that the school is cooperating with an ongoing investigation by Family and Children Services (FACS) Niagara, the beleaguered child protection agency.  It should be noted that FACS has its own issues — incidents of dead children, maltreatment, neglect, and malfeasance.

The academy is not affiliated with the Canadian Armed Forces; however, some would say it follows a strict military doctrine, including military barracks, uniforms, ranks and file, etc.  It claims a 100% placement rate into university or college.

Needless to say, some of the allegations made against Robert Land are frightening.  Silence is not going to solve this, and court action is a long, winding, complex, and frustrating prospect.  The only way to stop institutional abuse like what is being alleged here is to shine the light of day on them — to expose their secrets and hold them to account in the best and highest court of all, the court of public opinion.

Signal High will follow this as it makes its way through the system, and will investigate further.
