Calgary, Alberta, Canada (Signal High) —– A Canadian police officer has been charged in the shooting deaths of two men following what is being described as a “slow speed pursuit,” in 2023.
Calgary Police Constable Craig Slothard has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of Levon Boyce Jackson Fox of Goodstoney First Nation, and Wesley Davidson of Fort McMurry. According to reports, Slothard shot into the vehicle when police were unable to contain it following a traffic stop, for unknown reasons. The van was allegedly moving (at a slow speed) in the general direction of the police when Slothard fired at it killing the two men.
“The evidence gathered during [the] investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that offences had been committed,” said Matthew Block, executive director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). ASIRT investigates any incidents where members of the public are injured or killed by police in the province. “As is required by the Police Act, the investigation was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) to determine whether the evidence met the standard for prosecution.” The charges have not been tested in court.
