Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Signal High) —– A Toronto (Canada) police officer has pleaded guilty to downgraded charges in the shooting death of a homeless man. Toronto Police Constable Andrew Davis was charged with aggravated assault and discharging a firearm “with intent to maim, wound, disfigure, or endanger life,” following the incident in February 2023.
Davis, had been a police officer for just over a year. He was one of several officers responding to reports of a man with a knife who was walking around in circles and talking to himself. The man had an unleashed dog with him, and the complainant feared that the man may be harming the animal.
Police body-worn camera footage showed Constable Sarah Richards and her partner arrive and engage in conversation with the man, knife sheathed. Moments later, the man had attempted to escape police and it became apparent that he had committed self-harm. Richards can be heard yelling “Oh, my God. Shoot him!!” Davis fired two rounds into the man.
The man has initiated civil action.
